About/bio
Catherine A. Smith is an objects conservator who conducts research on pre-contact Māori textiles, and development of methods for plant materials identification, provenancing and conservation science relating to preservation of Māori textiles. She has carried out research in museums in Aotearoa, Australia, Europe, Great Britain and the US, and is past President of the NZCCM and Co-ordinator of the Objects from Indigenous and World Cultures ICOM-CC. Her research is centred in collaborative and inter-disciplinary approaches for increased understanding of the relationships between people and plants in Aotearoa, as well as interrogating ethics and in practice in cultural materials conservation.
