We are finally ready to share our finalised schedule! Our three days together consists two keynotes and a series of themed blocks of presentations. Our final day consists of a variety of tours and workshops around various institutions here in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The response to our conference theme Conservation in Aotearoa New Zealand: Inside and Outside // Ki Roto, Ki Waho has been strong, and we’ve had four key topic threads emerge.
The first topic is what we’re calling Community and Conservation. These talks and gallery tours explore how conservation works both inside GLAM institutions and in our communities, including the challenge of adapting conservation ethics to Māori landscapes.
Our second topic is Disaster Response. After the year that we’ve had, we’re not surprised that so many of us have experiences in disaster planning, response and recovery that need to be shared! We’ve got a variety of speakers that will focus on this area, including a talk on the response to Cyclone Gabrielle, and a 3-hour workshop that will cover risk identification, reduction and readiness.
The third topic we’ve named Environment Management. This section includes talks and workshops on the wide range of external factors that influence the safety of our collections, including lighting levels and construction dust, vibrations and pests, temperature and relative humidity. We have two workshops in this theme - an anoxic treatment pest management workshop at Auckland Museum’s offsite store, and a Microfading workshop in the conservation lab at Auckland Museum.
Our final topic is Conservation Projects. This is where we’ll share some of the awesome mahi that has taken place this year, in gallery tours, lightning talks, and tours of offsite storage facilities at MOTAT and the Auckland Council Archives.
We’re looking forward to seeing you all soon, and we hope you’re all as excited as we are. Registration closes on the 8th of October!
